Indivisible Montgomery Attends Activism Night at Wootton High School

Activism Night at Wooten High School

On Friday, April 5, Indivisible Montgomery members participated in a first-ever Activism Night with students at Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland. The Wootton High School Activists Club, a campus club that encourages political action and discussion among its members, hosted this event in order to connect fellow students with local, off-campus activist groups. More than 100 people took part.

Students had the opportunity to learn about the groups active in their community and meet some of their local government representatives. At the invitation of the Wootton High School Activists, Indivisible Montgomery sent two members to answer students’ questions and recruit interested young people.

After a brief mixer, attendees heard from Activists Club members and other Montgomery County student speakers.

Several local elected officials were present at the Activism Night:

  • Marc Elrich, Montgomery County executive
  • Sidney Katz, Evan Glass and Andrew Friedson, Montgomery County councilmembers
  • Jud Ashman, mayor of Gaithersburg
  • Laurie-Anne Sayles, Gaithersburg city councilmember

Voter registration emerged as an issue of high interest for attendees who spoke with the Indivisible Montgomery members. We hope to find future opportunities to support the voter registration efforts of Wootton High School Activists.

Members of the Activists Club signed up for the Indivisible Montgomery newsletter to ensure that club members receive our updates and calls to action. Activism Night offered an opportunity for our organization to improve its visibility among young Montgomery County activists and build a relationship with the next generation of engaged citizens.
